A unique study conducted by Watsonia food scientist, Rick Stammel, has failed to find a consistent reason why the majority of iced donuts have just a small section of sprinkles, but the same study has concluded that the distribution is perfect. In conducting the study, Stammel interviewed bakers all over Australia, hoping to find the origin of the one quarter to one third sprinkles section, but not one of them could provide a believable explanation.

Initially deflated by his inability to locate an original sprinkle innovator, Stammel redirected his study to investigate whether consumers would like more or less sprinkled on their iced donuts. When given the option of either more or less sprinkles on the icing, consumers overwhelmingly voted for no change. In fact, 97% of respondents ticked the box that said “If it aint broke, don’t fix it”.

So while Stammel continues his search for a plausible origin of the current distribution, he said he can now rest easy in the knowledge that the levels are just right. He said, “as much as I’d love to find out why, it’s reassuring to know that the technique is widely accepted by all Australians. And when you uncover that, maybe the reason behind it isn’t that important.”
